Malibu Open comes to Veteran’s Park Lagoon Aug 6-7

New lakefront water ski event to feature world’s best water skiers

Milwaukee – July 15, 2010 – Milwaukee’s lakefront Veteran’s Park Lagoon will host its first ever waterskiing event when the Malibu Open makes its debut on August 6-7. The world’s top professional water ski athletes will compete in traditional slalom and long-distance jumping events for $50,000 in prize money. Free-style jumping and barefoot skiing demonstrations round out the exciting 2-day program, which is open to the public with free admission.

The Malibu Open is enjoying a whole new popularity with the range of athletes from Will Asher, World Slalom Champion, to Freddy (“Nightmare”) Krueger, currently World Jump Champion and World Record Holder. Similar events have been held in California, Michigan and Alabama.

In slalom skiing, athletes navigate through a six-buoy course at constant speeds of 36 mph at a initial 13-meter line. After completion of each pass, the rope is shortened to increase difficulty. In the breathtaking long-distance jumping, skiers race toward a 6-foot high ramp reaching speeds of 70 mph. World Champion Freddy Krueger, known as the “Michael Jordan of Long Distance Ski Jumping,” recently jumped a phenomenal 236 feet at the Global Invitational night finals held in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

According to event organizer Dana Reed, “Professional waterskiing events are usually held on private lakes, so we are very excited about the perfect venue that Milwaukee offers the Malibu Open. People might be surprised to learn that the lagoon meets the minimum width and length requirements. Finals will be held Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., with 18 light towers lighting up the lagoon so it resembles an airport runway.”

The Malibu Open is a free event for family, friends and all to enjoy. The event is produced by Pro Slalom Events and sponsored by Malibu Boats. Concessions and parking will be organized by the Milwaukee County Parks Department.

NIGHT SKI JUMP EVENT DEBUTS AT GROVELAND OAKS COUNTY PARK

Professional water ski jumpers from around the world will perform amazing jumps to qualify for a chance to win $20,000 in prize money at Groveland Oaks County Park on July 17.

The 2010 Skiers Pier King of Darkness Night Jump event brings the world's top 10 water ski jumpers for the inaugural water ski jumping competition. Under the lights and in a high energy format, skiers will jump more than 230 feet through the air at speeds exceeding 75 miles per hour.

"The night format is exciting and fans feel as if they are part of the action," PJ McMillan, event organizer, said. "Fans will also get a chance to interact with the athletes and watch them use their talents to promote the sport and healthy lifestyle that goes along with it."

A premier show ski team, including barefoot skiers, trick skiers and wake boarders, will perform between main event rounds.

"Skiers Pier is proud to be the title sponsor of the 2010 King of Darkness Night Jump," Ron Koenig, Skiers Pier owner, said. "This type of event is the best way to capture the interest of prospective skiers and encourage those who are already into the sport."

The event runs from 6 – 11 p.m. Vendor display booths and live music begin at 6 p.m. The ski jumping competition begins at 7:30 p.m.

Concessions are available for purchase during the event. Coolers (no glass containers) are permitted.

Entry cost is $10/vehicle or free with a 2010 Oakland County Parks and Recreation annual vehicle permit.

"The ski jump event is a great addition to some of our campground recreation themed weekends," Jim Dunleavy, chief of operations and maintenance – north district, said. "We hope to have the competition here again, build on the event and make it a little bigger each year."

Groveland Oaks County Park is located at 14555 Dixie Highway in Holly.

SEBASTIEN DI PASQUA OFFICIAL RETIREMENT

The Former European jump record holder Sebastien Di Pasqua (Switzerland) has decided to bring his career to an end at 34 years-old. This decision was taken after a right knee injury.
''It is a hard step for many athletes, but from my point of view, I see it more as the end of a great adventure. I will always be thankful towards this sport that has brought so much to me.

The Doctors made me realize that if I do not impose myself some rest, I would jeopardise my chances of being healthy for the rest of my life; otherwise, by giving my knee some rest from all the hits taken by going over the ramp, that would help me recover 100%. From that moment on, my decision was then taken. Without any doubt, being healthy is a top priority for me, and I couldn’t  imagine my future without practicing some other recreational sports like snow skiing, mountain bike, paragliding and others...

Today I am relieved to be able to move on at the right time, and can’t wait to idealize new challenges for new horizons that are just the beginning of a new life for me.''

Sebastien will pursue his University Degree in Athletic Training this October.
